Job Search Mistakes | Quality Life Resources

Job Search Mistakes

Don?t make these common job search mistakes.

Searching for a new job, especially if you?re unemployed, takes time and patience. However, not everyone devotes the time and energy needed to land that new job. Here are the top mistakes people make when looking for a new job.

Not Putting in the Time Necessary

Looking for a job, particularly if you?re not working, is a job in itself. You should be spending several hours a day, most days of the week, looking for your job. The reason for this is that you need to get your resume out there to get called for interviews. If you aren?t applying, you?re not being considered for openings. I?m always amazed when I see interviews with people who have been unemployed for a very long time and they have only applied for a small number of jobs. Unless your skills are highly specialized, the average person can apply for several jobs a day.

According to a 2011 study by the Bureau of Labor and Statistics, the median length of unemployment is about ten weeks before employment is found. So, that means that half of people are unemployed for longer than ten weeks and half of people are unemployed for less. If you worked a 40 hour work week, this means that you?ll have about 400 extra hours to devote to your job search. That?s a lot of time. Make sure you?re using this time to send out resumes, update your skills, and gear your resume/cover letter to each job listing so you can increase your chances of getting an interview.

Not Networking

People often say things like ?Getting a job is about who you know.? Well, in many cases, this is true. So, you should be out trying to meet people in your field.

If you?re new to networking, it can be hard to know where to start. For this, the internet is a valuable tool. You can look up meetings for professional organizations, your local chamber of commerce, organizations for young (or not so young) professionals, and your university?s alumni association. Attending meetings like this help you to meet a variety of people who may have connections all over your area.

In addition to business and networking events, you can try other events that are likely to attract a professional crowd. This could be things like lectures at a museum or at a library. The people who attend these events may not be in your specific field but, it?s important to cast a wide net when looking for a job.

When networking, make sure you are nicely dressed. You don?t have to wear a suit if it?s not a suit occasion but, make sure you are neat, clean and dressed similarly to everyone else at the event. Also, it?s important to bring simple business cards with your name, phone number, and email address so you can quickly and easily give a potential contact your information.

Not Following Up

Once you do get an interview, make sure that you follow up within a day or two. According to my research, experts seem to be pretty evenly split as to whether a snail mail thank you card or an email thank you is the best way to go. However, all agree that you have to do something.

So, when you are at an interview, make sure you get the name of the person who interviewed you. If possible, get one of their business cards too. This is likely to have their direct contact information on it. Then, use your preferred method to follow up with your interviewer. This technique is simple but, it makes the interviewer think of you again after the interview and, hopefully, all of the wonderful things the two of you discussed.

When searching for a job, it?s important to use all the tools available to you. You never know when one of these things will lead to your next job.

What mistakes do you think job seekers should avoid?

Why You Need Bespoke Bathroom Design | Travel And Leisure Guide

July 28th, 2012 by | Posted under Real Estate.

?Totally managing project for your bathroom from beginning to end, can completely eradicate all the stress of co-ordinating the arrival of the plumber, to correspond with the tiling company you booked, which must then coincide with the electrical contractor to install the lighting. ?Choosing one company to totally control the project eliminates the need for independent contractors which can be unreliable and complicated to plan.?
Defining the initial plan and your requirements, to coincide with the plumbing which may be relocated, make sure that you get expert guidance and an individual service to ensure your new bathroom is much more than merely a room to have a bath and shower, but a calming setting to relax at the end of the day. With your choice of lighting to inset into false ceilings, or positioned over mirrors for convenience, you can make the ideal place to unwind. With a wide range of choices for your sanitary ware, you may perhaps consider a whirlpool or jacuzzi bath or more classic designs. The selection of style and colour can be best suited to your individual taste and accented with your choice of tiling or wall boards and bathroom accessories. Showers can be positioned over the bath in rooms with restricted space, or you may consider a wet room shower or cubicle shower.?
Ordering your bathroom from a company who also specialises in bespoke furniture and storage solutions can provide you the additional benefit of incorporating bespoke furniture into the room. This can be practical when space is confined to maximise the use of all space and fill any otherwise useless space and awkward corners. It is also perfect in the larger bathroom, to provide drawers and cupboards to store toiletries, bathroom towels and dressing gowns for your convenience. As with all bespoke designed furniture you can decide on the positioning of rails, shelves and drawers to best suit your storage needs within the room. The style of the units, again is completely of your personal choice. High gloss or reflected designs can be ideal in bathrooms, you can also find matching wall shelves or mirrors to give an individually designed look.?
Showrooms and selection of catalogues is the best way to fully appreciate the choice of products and the features of an individually designed bathroom. Your designer should be happy to offer all the important advice and their expert bathroom advisors will measure the room and discuss your plans and ideas, so as to make certain a specific and bespoke service through to the completion of your new bathroom.

Atlanta voters weigh tax increase to ease traffic

(AP) ? For decades, Atlanta has been the economic engine of the South, a dynamic city on the move. But if you've ever gotten behind the wheel here, it doesn't feel that way.

The Atlanta metropolitan area has some of the worst traffic in America, with drivers routinely stuck in monumental, bumper-to-bumper jams that can turn a 10-minute trip into a miserable, one-hour slog.

Hoping to ease the gridlock, the region's political and business leaders are pushing for a 1-cent increase in the sales tax to pay for billions of dollars in highway improvements and other transportation projects. The proposed tax is on Tuesday's ballot.

Civic leaders say that Atlanta's economic future hangs in the balance, with the metropolitan area in danger of losing business to more-livable cities unless it acts now to reduce congestion.

"Tampa, Charlotte, Denver, Dallas ... they all hope we lose," said Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce President Sam Williams. "The competition has been taking advantage of this."

Atlanta's traffic problems have been 50 years in the making, a consequence of runaway growth. The metropolitan area's population swelled from nearly 1.6 million in 1960 to more than 5.2 million in 2010, and many of the newcomers settled in suburbs radiating farther and farther from Atlanta's core.

Now those commuters are clogging the highways that run straight through the middle of the city or form a big ring around it.

Atlanta has a commuter rail system, but it is laid out basically like a big plus sign and doesn't reach many parts of the city. And there has long been opposition to its expansion.

The TomTom Congestion Index, compiled by the maker of automobile GPS devices, has ranked Atlanta the nation's eighth-most clogged city. According to the 2010 Census, Atlanta had the fourth-worst commute in America, with drivers taking an average of 30 minutes to get to or from work.

From billboards to beauty shops, the campaign for the tax has been hard-fought in recent weeks, and polls suggest the vote could be close.

Metro Atlanta is one of a dozen regions across Georgia that will vote independently on the tax increase, which could generate a total of more than $18 billion statewide for transportation projects over the next decade.

Atlanta stands to gain the biggest share. Supporters estimate the 1-cent increase would generate more than $8.4 billion between 2013 and 2022. The sales tax in the region is now around 5 or 6 cents on the dollar in most cases.

Each region developed a list of projects involving such things as roads, bridges, mass transit, ports, airports and bicycle and pedestrian facilities. Metro Atlanta's list is heavy on road projects ? including the widening or resurfacing of highways, the building of new ramps and reconstruction of a busy interchange ? and light on mass transit.

Opposition in metro Atlanta has crossed political and racial lines, creating unlikely allies and adversaries.

Pro-business Republicans, including Gov. Nathan Deal, are finding themselves at odds with tea-party leaders in the GOP, who argue government can't be trusted to manage the tax revenue responsibly.

The fiscal conservatives have made common cause with black Democrats, who say the plan doesn't do enough to help poor people and minorities because it devotes little to mass transit and overlooks some sections of the city, and with environmental groups, which fear more pollution and development.

"We're just united against a bad idea," said Neill Herring of the Sierra Club. "We've got to break this sprawl habit."

Supporters have bankrolled an $8 million campaign under the banner Untie Atlanta and say the transportation projects will create jobs via the construction work itself and the improvements that will ease congestion and make the city more attractive to companies looking to relocate.

"As a result of our failure to deal with our traffic issues as other leading cities in the world are doing far more rapidly, we risk entering a period of decline," Mayor Kasim Reed said. "This is our region's leadership moment."

Can bacteria fight brain cancer? | Cancer Kick

Infections occurring after brain-tumour surgery may cause cancer regression.

Doctor Stock / Getty

Last week, the Sacramento Bee reported that two neurosurgeons at the University of California, Davis, had been banned from research on humans after deliberately infecting three terminally ill cancer patients with pathogenic bacteria in an attempt to treat them. All three died, two showing complications from the infection. Nature explores what happened and the science behind it.

Who authorized the researchers to infect the patients?

All three patients consented to infection. However, anyone testing experimental drugs in the United States requires approval from their university?s Institutional Review Board (IRB) and oversight by the country?s Food and Drug Administration (FDA), both of which review evidence for safety and efficacy. Neurosurgeons Paul Muizelaar and Rudolph Schrot at the University of California (UC), Davis, did not obtain this approval; they say they did not think it was required. Harris Lewin, the vice-chancellor of research at UC Davis, wrote a letter to the FDA describing what had occurred as ?serious and continuing noncompliance?.

In 2008, working under instructions from Muizelaar, Schrot asked the FDA about the possibility of deliberately infecting a postoperative wound in a particular patient with glioblastoma with the bacterium Enterobacter aerogenes. He was told that animal studies were needed first. Muizelaar did not infect that patient, but arranged for a graduate student to begin tests in rats. Although bacteria were purchased as research materials not to be used in humans, they were eventually used in three other patients with glioblastoma.

The first of those asked Muizelaar about infection in 2010, and Schrot contacted the director of UC Davis?s IRB asking permission to perform what Lewin?s letter describes as a ?one-time procedure? not intended as research. The director concluded that this procedure could be classed as ?innovative care? that did not require approval by the FDA or IRB, but that subsequent work should be reviewed. Schrot and Muizelaar went on to treat two further patients and were seeking approval from an ad hoc ethics committee (not the IRB or FDA) to treat five more when the IRB director told the neurosurgeons to cease and desist, and began an internal investigation.

How is brain cancer usually treated?

Glioblastoma is an aggressive brain cancer and is usually treated with surgery, as well as with radiation and chemotherapy. However, the cancer almost always recurs after surgery. Half of patients die within 15 months of diagnosis; fewer than one in twenty lives longer than five years.

Why might an infection fight cancer?

There are isolated reports of patients with various types of cancer successfully fighting off an infection only to find that the cancer has also disappeared. Presumably, the infection spurs white blood cells to attack both pathogens and malignant cells. In 1999, researchers at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson described four case studies in which the regression of malignant brain tumours co-occurred with infection. Enterobacter aerogenes, the same bacterium used at UC Davis, was recovered from microbial cultures taken from three of the patients1.

What further studies have been done?

In 2004, a group led by Bert Vogelstein at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute in Maryland introduced cancer cells into mice and rabbits, allowed large tumours to form and then injected the animals with spores of the anaerobic bacterium Clostridium novyi-NT. About one-third of the animals? tumours disappeared, apparently as a result of an immune response2.

Then, in 2011, researchers at the Catholic University of Rome examined the records of 197 patients treated for glioblastoma between 2001 and 2008, of which ten developed pathogenic infections after surgery. Those patients had a median survival rate of 30 months, whereas patients who did not become infected had a median survival rate of 16 months. However, the authors concluded that the association was ?not definitive?3.

A 2009 report considered 382 patients with malignant brain cancer, 18 of whom developed infections. Infected patients lived longer on average, but the difference was not statistically significant4. What?s more, the researchers reasoned that infection may correlate with longer survival not because infection prolongs survival but because patients who live longer are more likely to develop infections.

Are there clinical trials studying whether an immune response can fight cancer?

Yes. But rather than infecting patients with active microbes, these studies use therapeutic vaccines. The first cancer-treatment vaccine, Provenge, for prostate cancer, was approved in 2010 but is still controversial.

A US government registry of clinical trials that have attained regulatory approval lists more than three dozen studies using vaccines for glioblastoma. One, at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, injects patients? brains with weakened, engineered poliovirus. Many of the others work by collecting a patient?s white blood cells and exposing them to cancer-specific molecules.

All Our Voices: Wedding gifts, wedding blessings

Last week the Episcopal Church passed an approved, if provisional liturgy for The Witnessing and Blessing of a Lifelong Covenant. Predictably much uproar ensued. Is it a marriage rite? (no.) Will straight people use it? (not likely?there are already BCP liturgies for marriage, and for blessing of a civil marriage, which remain officially off-limits for LGBT people). In the comments to some posts, several couples of long standing were insulted. If we?ve been together 20+ years, seemed the theme, why on earth would I do this now? ?If it's not even "real"?

Coincidentally, BP and I were at a (non-church) event last week where we met an out, gay man, M., who has been with his partner 27 years. The host genially barraged M, saying ?you live in New York! You can get married!? ?M. was modestly annoyed at this. ?Why would we get married NOW?? he asked. ?That would just insult the years we've had--as if they weren?t real.?

Now, I?ve gone on numerous times here about why I believe there should ultimately be one marriage rite (you can read my commentary and links here). But in this post, I want to ignore that, and address the common theme between these two responses: ?Why should I do this now? If marriage is a covenant between two people, I have already done that.?

Yup, you have! And so did my wife BP and I, when we exchanged rings privately. Our hearts were sealed together at that moment.

But we also took advantage of marrying, when it became (briefly) legal in California, and we took advantage of the blessing, when our Bishop allowed that possibility. I?ve told you about both events (here and here). While neither of these events changed our hearts towards each other, they nevertheless were very important to our relationship, and they shared something in common.

Both our wedding, and subsequent blessing, put our relationship into the context of community. Each turned out to be a profound and moving gift to us. And that?s what we told M., as we explained why he might want to marry.

No man is an island unto himself, wrote John Donne, and neither is a marriage. The whole concept exists within a culture and community. When the window to marry opened in CA, we said to each other, ?this is complicated (because of DOMA) and it may even be taken away (because of the pending Prop8). It?s not like a straight marriage in those regards. It's not the full thing itself. But we need to take the opportunities given. If we don?t seize the opportunity, and show how much this matters, there won?t be progress.? It seemed very rational.

We of course discovered that in every important way, it WAS and IS marriage, and we were lifted by it far more than we would have expected ahead of time. After all, we had already made that commitment. But our wedding was a chance to celebrate our relationship with friends and family, making public what had been private. They held us up in joy, and welcomed us to the broader community. That feeling of being held up was palpable. Amazing. ?It meant so much more than we could have imagined.

And we found, two and a half years later, that our blessing was much more than a blessing of our marriage. ?It didn't matter that we couldn?t use a BCP liturgy for our blessing.??It was, as I told you before, as much our Cathedral community claiming us and our marriage, as it was us claiming a blessing from them. Again, a palpable feeling. To become a gift is even greater than receiving one.

It?s no coincidence, then, that the title of the SCLM resources is ?I Will Bless You, and You Will Be a Blessing".

Marriage and blessing is not for us, the couple. It is for us, the community. It is a giving to us, and in return the giving of us.

Yes, I understand that there may be legal as well as philosophical reasons why many LGBT people may choose not to marry legally. Many will prefer not to engage with the current liturgy because it?s not officially marriage. And, of course, many couples have had commitment ceremonies or blessings already?they are already beyond this. Everyone has the choice to make.

But? I want you to consider that by engaging the new rite, it becomes marriage. I can?t think of any LGBT couple who would undergo a blessing service for whom it is NOT personally a marriage covenant, regardless of legal technicalities, and I?ll guarantee you the people witnessing it will consider it the same.

And so we were married. And we were, and are, blessed. And both of these were, and are, astonishing gifts not only to us, but of us.

Be a gift.

How to Engage Stakeholders

Tiffany Barber

Thank you everyone who was able to make it to our Culture, Conversations and Cocktails event. Great Place to Work was delighted to see old friends, as well as make new connections with like-minded folks. The origami fortune tellers were a huge success and we were excited to see so many guests discussing the topics we value most; culture, trust and leadership.

Earlier this week we discussed the importance of Communication in the Workplace and yesterday we posted a blog that featured Small Business Success Stories. In challenging times, these businesses did not reduce staff or cut costs and sacrifice product quality. Rather, they decided to forge ahead with the collaboration of stakeholders. They communicated with their employees, invited their feedback and subsequently came away with valuable input. They were then able to make wise, and ultimately successful, business decisions that lead to further growth.

Any company can become a success story. By fostering a culture of trust where upper management communicates with others and openly invites feedback, collaboration and innovation will inevitably follow. Last night?s Culture, Conversations and Cocktails event was just one example of how networking and communication can lead to better workplaces and better business strategy overall.

Here are just a few ideas on how to increase communication and collaboration in your workplace:

  • Provide Multiple Vehicles for Employee Suggestions. Everyone has their own unique style. If you want to successfully extract the brilliant ideas that we just know are bouncing around your employees? heads, you will need to cater to them. Set up surveys, email addresses, one-on-one sessions, group brainstorming sessions- you name it, to make sure everyone feels comfortable expressing themselves in their own individual way.
  • Increase Communication between Different Departments. Often times the right hand is too busy to check in with the left hand, and simple improvements to processes can be overlooked. Why not propose the challenges of one department to another and see how they would handle the situation? Some interesting ideas just might come out of it.
  • Offer Incentives to Customers for their Feedback. Customers are writing reviews of your company right now; do you know what they are saying? Ask for feedback and even offer incentives if need be, but make sure you know what your clients are thinking. Searching for common themes is always a good idea, but also keep an eye out for the isolated suggestion that might be a turning point for a particular product or service.
  • Never Stop Networking. Last night?s event was a hit because so many different perspectives gathered together to work towards a common goal; better workplaces. Don?t limit yourself to your department, geographic location or even your industry. You never know what will inspire you next!

For more tips on how to effectively communicate in the workplace, check out Systems Thinking: A Method for Communication. Your workplace is a dynamic, complex system comprised of various systems of people, departments and technologies, and these are your best resources for growing your business. Any organization can increase collaboration by shifting from a fragmented point of view (i.e. ?you are responsible for this?) to a more inclusive point of view (i.e. ?we are responsible for this?).

Facebook shares pressured by Zynga ahead of results

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Facebook shares tumbled ahead of its first quarterly results announcement as a public company on Thursday, hurt by a weak quarterly report and a grim outlook from online game developer Zynga.

Facebook Inc shares dropped 7 percent to $27.65 in premarket trading while Zynga Inc slumped 40 percent to $3.04 - the two most heavily traded stocks before the bell on Nasdaq.

"Considering that Zynga was a recent IPO, it's another black eye for Wall Street. You bring up an IPO and you get burnt again and again," said Joe Saluzzi, co-founder of Themis Trading LLC in Chatham, New Jersey.

Zynga's results are "not creating good confidence in the sector as they (social media companies are) certainly related to each other."

The fate of the two companies is intertwined, with Zynga's games, such as "FarmVille" and "CityVille," helping to make up more than a tenth of Facebook's revenue last year.

Late on Wednesday, Zynga slashed its 2012 outlook and the company's quarterly results badly missed Wall Street targets. A number of brokerages cut their price targets on the company on Thursday, including Wedbush, Citigroup and Lazard, casting some uncertainty over Facebook ahead of its inaugural results after the close of trading Thursday.

Earlier this week, the options market was forecasting a 14 percent move up or down in Facebook shares following the results. That means options investors expect the stock to rise to as much as $32 by Friday or to fall to as low as $24.

Since the IPOs, shares of Facebook and Zynga have been in a downward spiral. Facebook, at $28.45, is off nearly $10 from its market debut price of $38 in May, and Zynga is at $4.92, nearly half its debut price of $9.50 in December.

Despite the steep decline in their share prices, Facebook and Zynga are both trading well above their market valuations. Facebook is still trading at around 70 times earnings, according to Thomson Reuters data. An analysis by Thomson Reuters StarMine puts the company's intrinsic value at a modest $9.72 a share, or about one third its current value, based on estimates of the company's projected growth for the next decade.

Earlier in the week, analysts, on average, were expecting revenue in the second quarter to grow 28 percent to $1.15 billion.

With over 900 million users, Facebook is the world's largest social networking company, challenging established Web companies for consumers' online time and for advertising revenue.

Sanofi says dengue vaccine effective in trial

PARIS (Reuters) - Sanofi Pasteur, the vaccines division of Sanofi, said on Wednesday that its dengue vaccine candidate proved effective in a study in fighting the disease, which it described as a threat to almost 3 billion people.

"The results confirm the excellent safety profile of the vaccine candidate," Sanofi said in a statement, referring to a trial carried out in Thailand.

The full data are being reviewed by scientific experts and public health officials, with detailed results to be published later this year, Sanofi said.

Large-scale late-stage Phase III dengue vaccine clinical studies with 31,000 participants are under way in 10 countries in Asia and Latin America, the company added.

Man frees 17-pound lobster from Conn. restaurant

(AP) ? A Connecticut man purchased a 17-pound lobster at a Waterford restaurant, then released the crustacean back into Long Island Sound.

Don MacKenzie of Niantic tells The Day of New London (http://bit.ly/MGvGHb ) he knew the lobster, nicknamed "Lucky Larry" by local children, would have to be about 80-years-old to reach his current size and felt it deserved to live.

MacKenzie won't say how much he paid The Dock restaurant to take Larry off the menu.

He took the lobster back to sea Tuesday, releasing it in a secret location.

MacKenzie received a send-off from a group of children chanting "Let Larry Live" and the lobster was given a salute from the Niantic River Bridge operator who sounded the lift bridge's siren as the boat carrying it headed back to sea.

OS X Mountain Lion: Quick, Familiar, Cheap, And Drenched In iOS Goodness

Screen Shot 2012-07-25 at 1.11.07 AMTrying to write a review of OS X Mountain Lion is tricky. First of all, I had already written a review?back in February, when Apple legitimately surprised the world with the revelation that the ninth iteration of OS X was just about ready to go. Granted, back then I only had a few days to play with an early build. But it was already pretty solid at that point. Now, months later, I've had a lot of time to play with Mountain Lion, and I'm happy to report that it's even more solid. But ending my review there wouldn't do Mountain Lion the justice it deserves. It's definitely the most polished and robust version of OS X yet. If you liked Lion, you'll love Mountain Lion. If you didn't like Lion, you'll probably love Mountain Lion even more because it seems to fix a lot of the performance/quirkiness?issues that some folks were having with the last version of OS X. I didn't have any of those issues with Lion, so as someone who had started using an iOS device far more than a Mac, I liked Lion right from the start because it borrowed a lot of little ideas from iOS. And Mountain Lion expands upon that practice. So, unsurprisingly, I like it even more.

Even the iPad Can?t Help Apple Meet Wall Street?s Earnings Expectations

There's no slowing down the Apple freight train. The Unique Estate Planning Program from JSK Associates | Women ...

July 23, 2012 by pl

Because of the volatility of today?s market, it comes as no surprise that even some financial institutions rely on bigger companies to support their needs during downtime. The problem with this kind of set up is the fact that everything could go tumbling down and both the company as well as the financial backer could find themselves having to declare bankruptcy.? When this happens, it is generally their clients who suffer the most. That being said, it is only normal that a client should look for a financial institution that can work on their own, one who does not need any financial backing from other companies. One of the few financial advisory firms that are able to meet this criterion is JSK Associates.

?

JSK Associates has been in the financial industry since the early part of the ?80s. Having been in the field that long, they have already seen what clicks with their clients and what they can do away with. One of the things that the company is proud of is the fact they are able to provide their clients utmost service without having to require financial backing from other institutions. Some of the services that they are able to provide include tax planning, estate planning, and asset management. Of these, it is the estate planning that many people are not keenly aware of.

?

In essence, estate planning involves the preparation and the organizing of how an estate would be disposed of should the owner be no longer around. JSK Associates provides one of the most comprehensive estate planning around.? Before resolving to do anything, JSK checks first what would be the tax implications of the various strategies that they would implement. JSK staff takes time to evaluate exposure to estate tax as well as explore the various options a client can have in order to ensure a smooth disposal without incurring too much expense.

?

With JSK as a person?s estate planner, he or she need not worry of ever something happens to him or her, or in case the person needs to travel and there would be no one left behind to take care of his properties. What?s more, certain programs can be combined in the estate planning program making the latter even more comprehensive. Some of these programs include Stand By trusts and nursing home insurance.

?

The JSK Associates Estate Planning program comes in two parts. The first part deals with the preparations that need to be done should a medical emergency happen to the person. The second part, on the other hand, deals more with the distribution of the estate, among other things, in case the estate owner dies.?

Pat Gallagher: Rance Howard At 83 -- 64-Year Veteran Character Actor, Father Of Actors Ron And Clint -- Talks Candidly About Keeping His Sons Grounded And Staying Upbeat in an Unpredictable Business

Veteran character actor Rance Howard is a happy man. Although he's been to hundreds of auditions in his 64-year acting career and never quite achieved the superstardom status of his peers -- Spencer Tracy, Humphrey Bogart and John Wayne to name a few -- he doesn't look back with bitterness or resentment. He feels blessed.

The actor, who played Henry Boomhauer for two seasons in the television series "Gentle Ben," isn't exactly a household name, but his face is one you've seen thousands of times. He's acted in almost 200 films and various television shows: "Bat Masterson," "The Andy Griffith Show," "That Girl," "The Virginian," "Coach," "Married...With Children," "Ghost Whisper," "ER"... and the list just goes on and on and on.

Howard's sons -- Academy Award winning director Ron and character actor Clint -- have had their share of good fortune as child actors (Ron played Opie Taylor on "The Andy Griffith Show" and Richie Cunningham on "Happy Days"; Clint appeared on "Gentle Ben"). But when their acting careers took a left turn, dad remained -- as always -- upbeat and philosophical.

Howard spoke candidly about his career, what his past goals were and how he kept his wits about him as a character actor in an unstable, fickle business.

You've been an actor for 64 years. That's incredible. How early in your childhood did you know you wanted to be an actor?

Very early, when I was in the 7th grade. At that point I worked in a little play in a one-room schoolhouse where I was attending school and the bug bit me. My career started in 1948 when I went to New York and auditioned and was able to get a job in a children's touring company doing children's theater. That was my initiation to professional theater and when my career really started.

What was the first role that helped you get started either in film or in television?

One of the most exciting things that ever happened to me was when I auditioned and got in the touring company of a play called "Mister Roberts" with Henry Fonda. I played a character named Lindstrom. We toured about a year and a half hitting the major cities in the U.S. That was really, really exciting because it boosted my career even though I had been working for almost a year in children's theater. This was huge step up. I got that role in 1950. That was really the thing that cemented my career and my life for the course I had charted.

Was Henry Fonda nice to you? Did you enjoy acting with him?

Oh he was wonderful. We had a really good and interesting relationship on that tour. He loved to improvise little scenes just kind of off the cuff -- like for instance, checking into a hotel. If I would be at the register, he would come up and start an argument saying he was really there first. And I would reply to that and we would have a pretty good little exchange going. We fooled a lot of people. (Laughs)

Are there any big stars that surprised you over the years?

While working on "Cool Hand Luke" with Paul Newman, I started out seeing him in the morning and saying, "Good morning, Mr. Newman." He never acknowledged my greeting. In the evening I would say, "Good night, Mr. Newman." At the very most he would give me a bit of a nod. I continued that for two or three days until finally he said to me, "I don't fraternize."

What were your early goals in your career as an actor? Did you want to be a superstar like Cary Grant or Rock Hudson or Humphrey Bogart?

When I initially started in drama school at the University of Oklahoma, I thought I would be a western singing cowboy like Roy Rogers or Gene Autry or Tex Ritter. And I had never even heard of New York or Broadway or stage productions that would run for two or three or four years. That was all new to me. So actually the University of Oklahoma really introduced me to the stage and to theater. I became so enamored of the theater that I totally lost the idea of being a singing cowboy and wanted to really be a serious actor.

But to answer your question, I never really had a projected goal in my mind. I think if you'd have asked me that question 64 years ago, I would have thought by this time in my career I would have been as big as Spencer Tracey, Gary Cooper, John Wayne, Henry Fonda...the big ones. I just assumed that's where I would go. Now, looking back and knowing now how tough the business is, I am so happy and gratified to have been able to do what I really love. Even though I haven't achieved the height that I would have thought I might, I wouldn't change a thing. I love this business, and it's been so good to me. It's been a blessing to have been able to have that intent of being an actor, just surviving as an actor all my life and to be able to have done it. It's just so gratifying.

Your oldest son Ron was a child actor also. When did you decide to get Ron into acting?

My late wife Jean was an actress. We started out in the business together. We had no intention of bringing Ron into the business. He sort of fell in. When the opportunity came up for him to play this part in a movie called "The Journey" with Yul Brynner and Deborah Kerr, we didn't know if we wanted him to do this. Having been in the business about six years ourselves already, we knew the heartaches and the downfalls and the traps for adults, which are worse for children.

So we talked about it for a long time before we decided, OK, we'll do it. The director of the film was offering me a small part as a Russian soldier. They took the three of us over to Vienna, Austria to be in this movie. I think Ron turned four just before we left for Vienna and he was just an absolute natural. Acting for him was like playtime. So after we finished "The Journey" and returned to New York we thought: We saved his money, it was a good start for his college education and maybe this is not a bad thing. We didn't see anything harmful or detrimental in any way.

Ron was so precious as Opie in "The Andy Griffith Show." You must have been around on the set a lot.

I was there from the beginning from the time they did the pilot which was a spinoff of "The Danny Thomas Show." I had been working in the business. At that point I had been in the Air Force in Special Services directing plays and variety shows so I had a real sense, if you will, of what was needed and what was required in helping Ron learn his dialog and working with him. Ron was terrific. He had a great sense of drama and of timing and how to use emotion in a scene.

Did you become friends with Andy?

Oh, yes. Andy and I became very good friends.

How did you feel about his passing?

It was really a sad day when I heard that. I talked with Andy, I knew he was failing. It wasn't really a great surprise. We used to talk on the phone, and I miss not having Andy around, being able to call him and say, "Hey Andy, how's the weather down there?"

You were in several episodes of "Gentle Ben," which starred your son Clint. How was it working with him on set and then going home and telling him to clean his room?

(Laughs) Working with Clint was a real joy. Clint and I were living in an apartment hotel in Miami. We had maid service. I functioned as his father, mother, dialogue coach, playmate, chauffeur, cook and best buddy. He was eight years old. We worked a five-day schedule on the series. When we returned home from a day on the set, the responsibilities he was carrying made household chores seem trivial so we didn't dwell much on room cleaning.

Your sons seem like such gentlemen as adults. How did you keep your boys grounded when they were growing up?

I think my late wife, their mother Jean, and I ... we were both like depression babies. Our parents really felt the depression and it had really rubbed off on Jean and I so we were both really frugal people.

I was a character actor. I would do a "Death Valley Days" here and a "Lone Ranger" there but they were way out earning me. We could have taken their money and really have lived it up. We could have gone to Beverly Hills or wherever we wanted to and probably leased a mansion to house our family. We chose not to do that. We chose not to live on what the boys could afford, but what I could afford. We drove the kind of car that I could afford. The boys didn't have a lot of money ... maybe a quarter a week allowance. I tried to get them to do really honest work like mowing the lawn, taking out trash, cleaning up things. Jean and I both strived to get them to do that so they would appreciate sweat on the brow.

Show business can be very competitive. Did you feel there was any competition with the boys in any way?

The boys are five years apart. They were never really competitive with each other. Ron was the big brother and Clint was the little brother. They had a great relationship. They still have a great relationship.

Clint starred on "Gentle Ben." How did Clint process that when the acting gigs slowed down for him?

Well, Clint did very well. And the reason he did very well is that he was able to do roles in films and television. Clint was doing an exciting movie of the week and a film here and a television show here. In his growing up, Clint was really not faced with being totally unwanted or not being able to get work. He continued to get work.

Did your sons ever get picked on much when they were growing up because they were child actors? If so, how did you and your wife handle that?

Jean and I did not try to handle the boys' actions and reactions with their peers. If either of them came to us with a problem, we would explain that being in the public eye can cause jealousy and the best thing was to be open and friendly, try to understand and never become fearful. One time at an out-of-town basketball game when Ron had been fouled and was preparing to make a free throw, the crowd started chanting, "Opie!, Opie, Opie!" There referee motioned for Ron to wait. After awhile he blew his whistle, gesturing for the crowd to stop. They did. Ron stepped up to the line and made both shots.

Ron has been a very successful director -- I love it that he has included you and his brother in several of his films. Was that easy or hard to take direction from your son?

Oh, it was easy. To begin with, he is a very good director. He is excellent. An actor is always looking for a good director. Ron is such a good communicator. He can explain to the actors what he's looking for in the scene. He is just a dream director to work with. Some people may feel differently, but I don't have any trouble saying to myself, "OK, Ron is a director. He's your son and offstage or at home or on the basketball court, you don't have to take his direction. But on the set he's the director and whatever he says goes."

Your granddaughter -- Ron's daughter Bryce Dallas Howard -- played Hilly Holbrook in "The Help." I was blown away by her performance. She's a third generation "Howard" actor. How proud were you of her in that film?

Very! I have always been proud of Bryce. She is such a hard worker. From the time she was probably in junior high school or high school, she knew that's what she wanted to do. She took voice lessons, she took dance lessons and she made an effort to get in any play that was going on in school. She's like a really good carpenter or a good plumber or a good electrician who really knows their trade and can do anything you need, anything you want. A good carpenter can build it. She is that kind of an actress.

Acting can be a heartbreaking career because it doesn't always go well for a long period of time. Were you nervous about your granddaughter becoming an actress because of the ups and downs of the business or did you encourage it?

I didn't necessarily encourage it, but I didn't discourage it. This is what she wanted to do so I wouldn't try to talk her out of it. To give you an example, I remember at NYU she was doing a play called "Hamletmachine." In this play it was necessary -- at one point during the play for about 10 or 15 minutes -- everyone in the cast was totally nude on stage.

I remember Bryce's mother, Cheryl, almost putting her foot down and saying no you can't do that. I remember saying to Cheryl, "This is college. This is a learning process. Let her do that. If she can do that it will get rid of all inhibitions and she will never be inhibited by anything she has to do on the stage or in film." So Cheryl went along with that. And Bryce did it. I went to see it, and there she is, an 18, 19-year-old girl stark naked. (Laughs)

What are you doing now? Are you still acting?

Yes. I just finished a nice little cameo role on the film "The Lone Ranger." Johnny Depp plays Tonto and Army Hammer plays the Lone Ranger. It's going to be great entertainment.

Do you still have to audition for parts after all these years?

Yes, as a matter of fact I did audition for that part ... that doesn't bother me. I really enjoy the whole process. I like auditions because it is an opportunity to act. I don't look at it like I'm going in and will be judged and tested. I look at it like: this is an opportunity to perform. I look forward to auditions. I don't always get the part, but I usually do. When I give a really good audition, I walk away saying: that was really a good audition, I really enjoyed that. I don't care if I get the part or not. I feel like I've already done it.

You've acted in so many TV shows: "That Girl," "Bonanza," "The Waltons," "Happy Days," "Little House on the Prairie," "Laverne and Shirley," "Seinfeld" ... the list goes on forever. Did you have to audition for all of those parts?

Most of them I did. I specifically remember auditioning for "Seinfeld." I did two "Seinfelds." I played a blind man and a farmer who had a daughter. I remember when I auditioned for the farmer, I had a really ratty, raggedy old overalls and a shirt that belonged to my dad, some old farmers shoes and a beat-up straw hat, and I went in to audition. I auditioned for Larry David -- who was a hands-on producer -- and I was auditioning with Jerry Seinfeld [in front of Larry David]. I did the scene and Jerry Seinfeld looked at Larry David and said, "Now that's commitment." (Laughs) When I do an audition, I really prepare for it. I really get up for it. I totally enjoy it.

When you were auditioning with Jerry Seinfeld, did Jerry know you are Ron Howard's father?

If he knew it, he just had to somehow know it on his own because I never walk into an audition and say, "Hi, I'm Ron Howard's dad." I never play the Ron Howard card. I don't trade on his name at all.
