Emerging fungal infection in South West U.S. mimics cancer

ScienceDaily (Mar. 29, 2012) ? An emerging fungal infection of the gastrointestinal tract that mimics cancer and inflammatory bowel disease appears to be emerging in the Southwestern United States and other desert regions, according to Mayo Clinic researchers in Arizona investigating the disease. The invasive fungus, Basidiobolus ranarum, is typically found in the soil, decaying organic matter and the gastrointestinal tracts of fish, reptiles, amphibians, and bats.

Mayo researchers studied 44 cases of human gastrointestinal basidiobolomycosis reported from around the world, including 17 from Arizona, one from southern Utah and one from elsewhere in the U.S. Eight of the 44 patients died. Mayo's review of the cases is published online in the journal Clinical Infectious Diseases.

Basidiobolomycosis is usually a subcutaneous infection in the tropical and subtropical regions of the world that develops following traumatic inoculation of the fungus under the skin. The emergence of gastrointestinal involvement with Basidiobolus in arid regions has been considered unusual.

"The exact mode of acquisition of this gastrointestinal infection is unclear, although consumption of contaminated food or dirt is the favored hypothesis," says lead author H.R. Vikram, M.D., an infectious diseases physician at Mayo Clinic, where seven of the 19 U.S. cases studied were treated. "The infection is still considered so rare that no one had put together a complete description." He adds that more study needs to be done to determine how this infection is contracted, what underlying diseases might predispose patients to this infection and how best to treat it. He emphasizes that early recognition is key to successful treatment.

The first U.S. case of gastrointestinal Basidiobolus infection was reported in 1986. The CDC subsequently investigated six cases in Arizona between 1994 and 1999. This sparked the interest of researchers at Mayo Clinic in Arizona to study this infection.

Patients with this rare fungal infection had non-specific symptoms such as abdominal pain or a mass that could be felt on examination. Before a conclusive diagnosis of the fungal infection was made, most patients were thought to have an abdominal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease or diverticulitis. Surgical resection of the area of involvement and prolonged antifungal therapy successfully treated most patients.

Study co-authors include Jerry Smilack, M.D., retired; Infectious Diseases; Jonathan Leighton, M.D., and Michael Crowell, Ph.D., Gastroenterology; and Giovanni De Petris, M.D., Anatomic Pathology.

Heating and Air Conditioning From The Earth's Ambient Temperature

People are always looking for ways to get the most out of their energy dollars and be more environmentally conscious. Some people choose to use less power by keeping the thermostat set to a higher temperature in summer and lower in winter. That is fine but it does not account for the discomfort of being too hot or too cold. Others try and harness other alternative methods to offset the amount of electricity they extract from the grid. This is a good idea but it has a number of flaws. For one thing these systems are expensive and require a lot of harmful chemicals to manufacture. For another, if the sun is not shining, solar power is not worth anything. That means the home is only green when weather permits.

Fortunately there is another option that uses less power; less chemicals and will never not work. It is called geothermal heating and air conditioning and it uses an alternative option that is safe, renewable and very inexpensive to operate.

Essentially these geothermal heating and air conditioning systems use the natural heat contained in the crust of the earth to warm a series of looped water pipes beneath the house. These are warmed to the same temperature of the earth and then return back up to the house. Once their heating and air conditioning compressors circulate the temperature controlled environment, as they would have if they had been artificially enhanced.

This allows the home to remain the same temperature as the inside of the earth all year long with little operation costs. Of course as with any thing there is a drawback and that is the initial cost. If by chance the home you are going to be living in has not been built yet there is the potential to install a geothermal heating and air conditioning system without a lot of added cost. On the other hand retrofitting an existing property requires a number of things to be right and cost nearly thirty thousand dollars. This is a lot to invest in something but it is worth remembering that it will seriously save money in the long run and will eliminate the need for outside energy for any sort of climate control need other than the price of running the pump to circulate the water beneath the home.

Heating and air conditioning does not need to be expense and bad for the environment. With geothermal the need for toxic refrigerants is eliminated and the burning of petroleum is no longer used to warm living spaces. The cost to set up can be substantial but the benefit will last forever and never need replacing or repair for the life of the system.

Back before I had a kid, I used to take weekly Pilates classes at a local studio. While many of the moves bore passing resemblance to those we do in my yoga class, it was unabashedly a workout?a sweat-inducing, core-honing, fast-paced workout. I loved it (and so did my abs). But then my daughter came along and something had to give, so I said goodbye to Pilates, but I missed it!

For plant-inhabiting predatory mites, living among familiar neighbors reduces stress. This allows individuals to focus on other tasks and be more productive, in particular while they are foraging. The new study by Markus Strodl and Peter Schausberger, from the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences in Vienna, Austria, supports the theory that so-called 'social familiarity' reduces the cognitive, physiological and behavioral costs of group-living, leading to increased efficiency in other tasks. Their work is published online in Springer's journal, Naturwissenschaften - The Science of Nature.

Species living in groups, such as the spider mites' predator, Phytoseiulus persimilis, face a number of stressors including social interactions with other individuals of the same species during the juvenile development phase. This is particularly so when they live in small patches with limited food availability. Within such patches, these individuals compete for food, space and future mates or may even be mutual predators. In order to reduce these conflicts, many group-living species are able to discriminate familiar and unfamiliar individuals based on prior contact, and familiar individuals tend to stick together.

Strodl and Schausberger studied whether a familiar social environment during the juvenile phase had any positive effects on the predatory mite's development. Among this species, group-living is brought about by the predators foraging, reproducing and developing spider mite webs, as well as mutual attraction.

In a series of three experiments, the authors showed that familiarity had significant effects on individual grouping and foraging traits of juvenile P. persimilis. In mixed-age groups of familiar and unfamiliar individuals, familiar individuals preferred to stick together.

Life-stage influenced this grouping behavior: larvae were much closer together than older individuals. In groups of individuals of the same age, the distances between individuals were smaller within groups of familiar mites than within groups of unfamiliar mites.

At similar developmental speed and body size at maturity, juvenile mites held in familiar groups foraged more efficiently than juvenile mites held in unfamiliar groups. The authors also identified a sensitive familiarization period during the larval stage, with memory persisting into the adult stage.

Would you think it was ok for your wife or husband to cheat on you?

If you are just not pleased with your current partner and know that the relationship will never be any better then you should consider ending the relationship rather than getting affair relationships to help keep you pleased. Ending a relationship is really a large step and one that you are attempting to steer clear of but if its inevitable then you should do it.

Sometimes it could appear simpler to remain in an unhappy relationship because you may depend on your partner for assistance. If your partner is the primary income earner then it might be a struggle financially if you ended the relationship. If this is the case then it may appear easier to continue having affairs rather than end this relationship and be on your personal. If you are unhappy then theres no point trying to reconcile and make a relationship work, and monetary factors are not sufficient to remain in an unhappy relationship.

Lack of communication is often a large reason why relationships fail when a couple turn out to be unhappy but they do not comprehend their partner?s feelings. If youre partner is not conscious that you are unhappy or why you are unhappy then they cant do anything to assist the situation. It may be that your partner is perfectly pleased within the relationship and assumes which you are also and unless you let them know otherwise then theyll continue to think that everything is all correct. If you let them know that you are not happy then you are able to function together to improve things.

BATS founder pushes for IPO despite "freak" glitch

NEW YORK (Reuters) - BATS Global Markets, the U.S. exchange operator that withdrew its public offering Friday after a computer glitch sent its newly-issued stock into a tailspin, should develop a "credible IPO plan" and go through with it in the second quarter, its founder and current director said.

BATS' own stock was to be its first listing. But the initial public offering ended up a disaster after a software bug briefly sent the price of the shares down from $16 to less than a penny, before trading was halted. Later in the day, BATS took the extremely rare step of withdrawing the IPO altogether.

The company's founder, Dave Cummings, also advocated suspending all bonus plans at BATS, writing in an open letter emailed to industry insiders on Sunday: "In this business, mistakes cost money."

BATS is an electronic exchange owned by many of the world's largest banks and trading firms. In the last decade it has taken on the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq in the trading of stocks and, recently, also wanted to challenge them in listings.

"This was a freak one-time event," wrote Cummings, also the outspoken chairman of Tradebot Systems, an electronic trading firm that like BATS is based in Kansas City, MO.

"BATS management should develop a plan to go public in the second quarter, if possible," he said.?"This might seem tough, but I believe it is the only way to move past the issue."

Cummings, who remains a BATS investor after stepping down as its CEO in 2007, said the deal would need to be re-priced. But he defended BATS' technological record and argued that the "botched IPO" does not have much long-term impact on earnings because the exchange has "solid fundamentals."

Late on Friday, BATS outlined how the bug set off a series of fast-paced glitches through the trading day, including a halt in the trading of Apple Inc shares and the cancellation of erroneous trades in both Apple and BATS stock.

The software code used for the IPO was new and lab-tested, Cummings said, but "bugs do occur" in the real world. "BATS just happened to discover a bug at the most embarrassing time possible."

Cummings, a trailblazer and fierce defender of electronic trading, occasionally sends such emails to finance executives, traders, regulators and journalists. The letter on Sunday morning was titled "What should BATS do now?"

PAINFUL UNWINDING

The episode is sure to draw scrutiny from the Securities and Exchange Commission, which since the 2010 "flash crash" has pledged to crack down on problems in the high-speed electronic marketplace that regulators worry has grown unstable and perhaps unfair for investors.

The BATS breakdown could trip up, once again, the march over the last decade toward increasingly automated markets in the North America, Europe and elsewhere. And it could land BATS in legal trouble for withdrawing its IPO after trades were executed in the public marketplace.

IPO underwriters included Citigroup Inc, Morgan Stanley and Credit Suisse Group, which along with trading firm Getco LLC and others are major BATS stakeholders.

Unwinding the IPO would mean that the banks and other owners would have to return to investors about $100 million that they gained by selling their stakes in BATS. Also in play are millions of dollars in fees the banks would have received for doing the underwriting.

It remains unclear just how damaging the foul-up could prove to BATS' reputation for running a sound market.

Cummings founded BATS, an acronym for "Better Alternative Trading System," in 2005 with 13 employees. It now handles about 11 percent of all U.S. stock trading, runs an options market, and recently completed the cross-Atlantic takeover of alternative trading venue Chi-X Europe.

BATS, now headed by 45-year-old Joe Ratterman, is the third-largest exchange group in the United States after NYSE Euronext and Nasdaq OMX Group, and helped force those incumbents to modernize their systems over the years. It did likewise in Europe, where electronic markets and high-frequency trading have also taken hold.

Friday's market debut would have marked a major next step in the company's evolution.

PARIS (AP) ? A Frenchman suspected of helping his brother plot attacks against Jewish schoolchildren and paratroopers has been handed preliminary murder and terrorism charges.

But Abdelkader Merah denied any role in the attacks. Investigators looking into France's worst terror attacks in years believe Merah helped his brother Mohamed prepare the killings, and are investigating whether they were linked to an international network of extremists or worked on their own.

Abdelkader's lawyer said he feels like "a scapegoat."

"No one knew anything" about what Mohamed was plotting, lawyer Anne-Sophie Laguens told reporters in Paris on Sunday. She dismissed reports that Abdelkader had praised his brother's attacks. "He was never proud of those actions."

Mohamed Merah, 23, claimed responsibility for killing three Jewish schoolchildren, a rabbi and three paratroopers earlier this month. After a 32-hour standoff with police, he died Thursday in a hail of gunfire as he jumped out a window of his apartment in the southern city of Toulouse.

Since then, attention has focused on his older brother Abdelkader Merah, who was handed preliminary charges on Sunday of complicity to murder and theft, and involvement in a terrorist enterprise, prosecutors said. Detained last week, he will remain in custody pending further investigation.

Preliminary charges under French law mean there is strong reason to believe a crime was committed, but allow magistrates more time to investigate.

Authorities suspect Abdelkader had a role in acquiring his younger brother's arsenal and financing his trips to Afghanistan, Pakistan and the Middle East. Mohamed Merah claimed allegiance to al-Qaida and told police he traveled to Afghanistan and Pakistan for training.

Abdelkader was questioned several years ago about alleged links to a network sending Toulouse-area youths to Iraq, but no action was brought against him at the time.

Prosecutor Francois Molins said the inquiry is also looking at anyone else who could have been involved in planning the attacks.

The brother's girlfriend, Yamina Mesbah, was held, then released early Sunday without being charged. The Merah brothers' mother was released Friday night.

The girlfriend denied any involvement in what happened and said she was shocked by the killings, her lawyer Guy Debuisson said, adding that Abdelkader Merah appeared to have led a double life.

"This woman was unaware of anything about her husband's accessory, complementary or secret life," the lawyer said. The couple married according to Muslim custom in 2006, but did not undergo the civil ceremony required in France for a marriage to be recognized.

Abdelkader Merah took five or six long trips to Egypt, ostensibly to study Arabic literature, and his girlfriend joined him on two or three, the lawyer said.

During questioning by police, the lawyer said, Mesbah learned that Merah had had other motivations for his trip to Egypt and "a life that led him toward an extremely intense ... fundamentalism."

"The question to ask today is if Mohamed was the only one that was indoctrinated. Was it just him or are there others?" Debuisson asked.

The first paratrooper killed, Imad Ibn Ziaten, was buried Sunday in his hometown in Morocco on the Mediterranean coast. Townspeople held French and Moroccan flags as soldiers carried the coffin to the grave.

"It is incomprehensible, it is unimaginable. Terrorism doesn't understand this. And above all we must not confuse Islam and fanaticism. They have nothing to do with one another," his brother Hatim Ibn Ziaten said.

French State Secretary for Defense Marc Laffineur accompanied the family to Morocco, saying he wanted to show that "France is in mourning." The other paratroopers were buried in France last week, and the Jewish children and rabbi were buried in Israel.

The killings have affected the race for French presidential elections in April and May, and raised concerns of tensions among France's large Muslim and Jewish communities.

Thousands of people in Paris and Toulouse marched silently Sunday urging unity and tolerance of all religions and cultures after the killings. An enormous French tricolor flag borne by dozens of marchers waved above the Paris march as it snaked away from the Place de la Bastille, birthplace of the French Revolution.
