Jazz Great John Lamb, Actor-Singer Sharon Scott, Poet Peter ...

[February 2012 ~ St. Petersburg, Fla.] The Studio@620 Honors presented by the Tampa Bay Times, set for 6:20 p.m. on Saturday, March 24, 2012, at the Renaissances Vinoy and Golf Club, will honor six stellar individuals whose lifetime work has contributed to the quality of life in the Tampa Bay region and around the nation and world. The honorees are former St. Petersburg Mayor and CEO of the Tampa Bay Community Foundation David Fischer, emerging artist Glenn Grieves, choreographer and educator Jai Hinson, civic activist Mrs. Johnnie B. Mack; journalist, author, and educator Bill Maxwell; and Tony Award-winning playwright, screenwriter, and educator Mark Medoff.

In addition to the six 2012 honorees, the Honors evening will feature performances by musicians, singers, dancers, and literary luminati. Bassist John Lamb?s professional career in music included three years with the Duke Ellington Orchestra and appearing on stage with other outstanding jazz artists and composers, such as Billy Strayhorn and Paul Gonsalves, around the world. Born in Florida, he returned here to a career in education, teaching music in Pinellas County public schools for over 30 years. His latest CD release is ?Coversations-North of the Border.?

Actor-singer Sharon Scott is well known to Tampa Bay area audiences for her work in plays (King Hedley II at American Stage, Black Nativity at St. Petersburg?s Palladium, Mahalia at Studio@620). In New York, she starred in a one-woman show called High-hat Hattie, based on the life of Hattie McDaniel, who won the Academy Award for her role as Mammy in Gone with the Wind. Her New York appearances won Scott praise from the New York Times. She has also toured the world in the cast of Ain?t Misbehavin?. Her powerful voice and singing style will be showcased at the Studio@620 Honors.

Peter Meinke is a prize-winning poet and author who has published poetry to national acclaim beginning in the 1960?s with works first appearing in The New Republic. Since then, he has authored seven books of poetry. For his first collection of short stories, The Piano Tuner, he received the Flannery O?Connor Award for Short Fiction in 1986. ?Among other awards are two National Endowment of the Arts fellowships, the O?Henry Award, and three prizes from the Poetry Society of America. He has also written two works of non-fiction and two children?s books. He is the City of St. Petersburg?s Poet Laureate, and presently writes a column for the weekly Creative Loafing.

Since opening in 2004, The Studio@620 has encouraged and inspired the visual and performance arts, lively public discussions and partnerships with other groups. All have flourished. Studio Honors began as the Social Justice Pioneer Awards, which recognized some of the most influential people of our age, including John Hope Franklin, Susan Sarandon, John Lewis, Herb Snitzer, Ray Arsenault, and St. Petersburg?s own premier jazz musician Buster Cooper.

The Tampa Bay Times is the presenting sponsor for the 2012 Studio Honors. Friends of the Studio sponsors include Sylvia Rusche, Rob Bowen, and Sonia Raymund.

Studio@620 co-founder and Artistic Director Bob Devin Jones will produce and direct the 2012 Studio Honors celebration. Nate Najar is the musical director. Glass artist Duncan McClellan designs and creates the Studio Honors awards. Studio@620 trustees Amber Brinkley and Kim Jackson are the gala co-chairs. The gala committee also includes David Ellis, Studio@620 co-founder, and Board of Trustees officers Alizza Punzalan, president; Simone DeLoach, vice-president; Dar Webb, treasurer, and Sydni Ann Shollenberger, secretary.

The 2012 Studio Honors will begin at 6:20 p.m. on Saturday, March 24. Individual tickets for dinner and entertainment are $175 or $1,500 for a table of ten. Sponsorships are available as are program ads. A limited number of chance opportunities for a one-week stay at a Tuscan villa in Italy are also available for $50.
